Post Operative Instructions for Implants
These general instructions support recovery after dental implant surgery. Follow the personalized instructions provided by your treating dentist. Bone grafting, sinus procedures, and temporary teeth may require additional precautions. If you received sedation, also follow your separate sedation discharge instructions.
Light oozing or blood-tinged saliva may occur after surgery. If bleeding occurs, place slightly damp gauze over the bleeding area and apply steady biting pressure for 30 minutes, following your dentist’s instructions. Avoid repeatedly removing the gauze to check.
Contact the office if bleeding does not stop with pressure or becomes heavier. Remove gauze before eating, drinking, or sleeping.
Rest after surgery and avoid strenuous activity during the initial recovery period. Ask your dentist when you can resume exercise.
Swelling and bruising may develop after implant surgery and can increase during the first two to three days before improving.
A cold pack wrapped in a cloth can be applied to the outside of the cheek for short intervals during the first 24–48 hours. Take breaks between applications and do not place ice directly on the skin.
Contact the office if swelling continues to worsen after the first few days, returns after improving, or occurs with fever.
Take pain medication only as directed by your dentist and the medication label. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Before adding an over-the-counter pain reliever to a prescription, check with your dentist or pharmacist. Some medications contain overlapping ingredients, and certain combinations may not be appropriate for your health or other medicines.
Do not stop prescribed aspirin or blood-thinning medication unless your treating clinician directs you to do so. Avoid alcohol and driving while taking medication that causes drowsiness.
If antibiotics are prescribed, take them exactly as directed. Contact your provider about suspected side effects. Call the office if pain is severe, is not controlled by your recommended medication, or worsens after initially improving.
Keep your mouth clean while protecting the surgical area. Avoid rinsing or forceful spitting during the first 24 hours unless your dentist gives different instructions.
Continue gently brushing teeth away from the surgical site. Your dentist will tell you when and how to clean around the implant, stitches, or temporary restoration. Do not scrub the incision or disturb the area with your fingers or tongue.
After the first 24 hours, use gentle salt-water rinses or a prescribed mouth rinse according to your dentist’s instructions. Do not use a water flosser or irrigation syringe at the surgical site until instructed.
Attend your follow-up appointments so your dentist can assess healing and provide further cleaning guidance.
Choose soft foods initially and avoid chewing directly on the surgical area. Avoid hot foods and drinks while your mouth is numb, and take care not to bite your lip, cheek, or tongue. Drink water regularly and avoid straws during early recovery.
If you have temporary teeth or a full-arch restoration, follow the specific diet provided by your implant dentist. Feeling comfortable does not mean the implants are ready for normal chewing forces.
Wear a removable denture over the surgical area only if your dentist has approved it. Contact the office if it presses on the site or causes soreness.
Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours, longer if instructed, and while taking medication that interacts with it.
Avoid smoking and vaping during healing. Smoking increases the risk of implant complications and can interfere with recovery.
Discuss tobacco and nicotine use with your dentist, including support for quitting. Do not assume that restarting after a few days is safe for your implants.
