Cone beam computed tomography, or CBCT, uses X-rays to create three-dimensional images of teeth, jawbone, and surrounding structures. These images can help with dental implant planning and the evaluation of certain dental conditions. CBCT is not necessary for every patient. Your dentist can determine whether the additional information is needed for your diagnosis or treatment.

An intraoral camera is a small handheld device that captures close-up photographs inside the mouth. These images can help your dentist show you visible areas of concern and explain findings during your examination. A camera does not replace dental X-rays. It is also different from an intraoral scanner, which captures digital impressions of teeth.

Digital dental X-rays capture images that can be displayed on a computer. They help dentists examine teeth and supporting bone, including areas that cannot be seen during a visual examination. X-rays are recommended according to individual needs, taking into account symptoms, oral health, and previous images. Your dentist can explain the purpose of any recommended imaging.

Dental lasers use light energy for specific dental procedures. Their uses depend on the type of laser and the tissue being treated. A laser may be appropriate for some procedures, but it is not suitable for every treatment or patient. Your dentist can explain whether a laser is an option, along with its potential benefits, limitations, and alternatives.
